Calder Centre - Saskatoon Health Region
The Calder Centre Adult Program is a 32-bed inpatient treatment program that provides a safe, supportive environment to assist chemically dependent individuals through the stabilization process of recovery.
The Calder Centre Youth Program is a 12-bed inpatient treatment program that provides stabilization services to adolescents with chemical dependency issues while engaging their families in the treatment and recovery process.
Calder Centre's philosophy is that volunteers, properly selected, orientated, trained, assigned and supervised can:
- Provide client care
- Supplement the role of paid staff
- Stimulate client's interest in creative and community activities as well as intellectual and recreational pursuits in order to help them develop non-chemical leisure interests
All volunteers are asked to make a minimum commitment of forty hours of service. Orientation is required of all volunteers prior to their placement. Volunteers undergo a trial period of one month in order to ensure both the volunteer and Calder Centre are satisfied with the placement. From its modest beginnings in 1970 with 15 people, to its current program for 390 adults and 100 staff members, Cosmopolitan Industries Ltd. has remained true to its earliest commitment to offer services to those whose disabilities prohibit their involvement in other rehabilitation programs. Cosmo was initiated to meet the long-term needs of adults who are mentally and multiply challenged. Its programs continue to offer to adults who are severely mentally and/or multiply challenged opportunities to enhance daily living skills. Where there is an opportunity for development, it is promoted. In every instance enhancing QUALITY OF LIFE is a key goal.

We develop and maintain programs to help women dealing with the criminal justice system at all stages—before, during and after they are in conflict with the law, i.e. women:
at risk
in court

We provide a variety of opportunities for members of the community to make a difference in the lives of women in conflict with the law, while gaining valuable knowledge and experience within the criminal justice system. After participating in training about:
the criminal justice system,
court procedures,
substance abuse,
status of women issues,
Aboriginal issues, and
community resources,
volunteers work in the courts, in the community, or in our office, providing a variety of services, including:
direct service to women and girls inside and outside the courtroom,

Frontier College Saskatoon
As Canada's original literacy organization, Frontier College has been recruiting dedicated volunteers to work with Canadian children, youth and adults from all over Canada since 1899. Our history is rich with stories of Labourer-Teachers working alongside their fellow labourers in mines, lumber camps, railway camps and other remote locations. These Labourer-Teachers worked day and night to help Canada's first newcomers adjust to this wonderful country. Since then, our programs have helped millions of Canadians improve their literacy skills.
Frontier College operates a variety of literacy programs in locations across Canada. Today, we recruit and train volunteers to work with children, youth and adults in a great array of settings. We also help other community-based organizations set up and run literacy programs for their own participants.
We believe literacy is a right. We work with volunteers and community partners to give people the skills and confidence they need to reach their potential and contribute to society.
We will achieve our mission for literacy while incorporating our values through the following actions:
- Volunteer mobilization
- Youth leadership development
- Community capacity building

Joy Home of Hope
Joy Home of Hope is an orphanage based in Buremba, Uganda. Our mission is to provide hope and opportunity for less privileged youth by offering shelter, basic education, skills development and basic health services. We do this by trying to end violence and oppression against young girls and children (both girls and boys) who have lost parents due to HIV. We provide them with basic needs like shelter, education, food, clothing and love. We also provide counselling, advocacy and the support necessary to build their self-esteem.
Maureen and David met in 1998 when both of them were looking after orphans in Uganda. When they moved to Canada in 2004, they continued with helping orphans and organizations that furthered this mission. In 2010 they started an orphanage of their own in the village of Buremba, Uganda. Initially planned for 30 orphans as a start, they had 100 orphans at the door the first day! Seeing such an overwhelming need, they have set up Joy Home of Hope and are expanding the orphanage with the intention to expand further in other centres.

Motorcycle Ride For Dad - Saskatoon
If I had gotten checked this time last year, I wouldn't be planning my own funeral today." Charlie Pester, Kingston educator and role model
That's the quote that started the Motorcycle Ride For Dad. That single sentence serves as an inspiration for the hundreds of people across Canada who raise money for prostate cancer awareness and research though annual local Rides.
When Garry Janz heard the words of Charlie Pester in 2000, he was moved to do something to raise awareness and funds for the fight against prostate cancer. Along with Byron Smith of the Ottawa Police Association, Janz organized the first Ride For Dad in Ottawa.
The Ottawa Ride became an annual event and experienced phenomenal growth each year. Soon, other cities were requesting similar events be held in their communities. From its humble beginnings, the Ride For Dad has grown to include 30 cities across Canada and plans are underway for several more. Today, more than 250,000 men, women and children have been involved... raising over $9,000,000 towards the fight against prostate cancer!
June 18th 2011 marked the Third Annual Saskatoon Motorcycle Ride for Dad. With 356 registered riders, over 200 motorcycle enthusiasts braved the wind and rain to take part in the event. Starting with a parade through the City, the riders set out on a poker run passing through the surrounding communities of Rosthern and Humboldt helping raise awareness on the way.
Thanks to their support, the total pledges raised came to $107,727.00. A 46% increase from last year! Further with the help of our many sponsors, volunteers and community fundraising efforts, we have raised that total to $130,614.00! With your help, we are able to provide education, awareness and funding for research in the ongoing battle against prostate cancer right here in our Community.
The Motorcycle Ride will be going to different communities each year to help raise awareness of prostate cancer in Saskatchewan. We are looking forward to June 16, 2012 as the Ride will take us from Saskatoon to Blaine Lake and The Battlefords.

Saskatoon City Hospital - Saskatoon Health Region
Saskatoon City Hospital (SCH), originally built in 1909, was the first municipal hospital in Western Canada, located on 6th Avenue North. Demand for hospital beds became more evident through the years as the city of Saskatoon grew and throughout its 75 year history, the hospital underwent many renovations and additions. With changing needs of residents and required upgrades to the building and equipment, the present Saskatoon City Hospital was built and officially opened in October 1993. The unique design of SCH uses the eight-storey glass atrium to connect two separate buildings: The Diagnostic and Treatment Tower and the Nursing Tower.
SCH functions as the centre for Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Rehabilitation and houses the Transitional Care Unit and Breast Health Centre. It also has opened the first provincial research unit for Multiple Sclerosis.
Available volunteer opportunities vary depending on current client needs and vacant volunteer positions. For more information visit the Saskatoon Health Region website or contact Lisa Hildebrandt - Lead, Volunteer Workforce Service Initiatives.

Community food security works towards 3 outcomes:
Decreased hunger

The Saskatoon Opera
The vision of Saskatoon Opera is to be an Opera Company that is a star on the regional cultural landscape. The mission is to undertake, encourage, and promote the production and presentation of professional opera in Saskatchewan and to offer programs and events designed to increase knowledge and appreciation of the world of opera.
History
In 1978, the Saskatoon Opera Association was incorporated. Since then, it has presented various classical operas and light opera, first using a varied mix of amateur, student, semi-professional and now professional talent.
1980 marked the first production for Saskatoon Opera with a semi-staged performance of Bizet's Carmen.
In the early years, some performances were amateur productions or semi-professional productions. However during the past 9 years, all of the Saskatoon Opera's performances feature professional singers and orchestra, and a music director; and since 2000, Saskatoon Opera is now a nationally recognized professional opera company.
2001 saw another first for Saskatoon Opera: Saskatoon Opera began a school touring program, Opera in Schools.
In 2003, Bizet's Carmen, a very challenging opera to stage, was a milestone production for Saskatoon Opera. Each succeeding year Saskatoon Opera moved to increasing levels of professionalism.
2008 marked another milestone for Saskatoon Opera as it moved into a permanent performing arts home in the Rawlco Radio Hall of the Frank and Ellen Remai Arts Centre.
In 2009, the Saskatoon Opera produced La Boheme, the largest and most challenging opera it has yet undertaken.
