Why Volunteer Together as a FAMILY?

In our fast-paced society it is not always easy to spend quality time together as a family.  When families volunteer together they are able to spend uninterrupted time together and they also have the privilege of making a difference in other people’s lives.

Families volunteer because:

  • Family ties are strengthened.
  • Allows family time and makes family time valuable.
  • Communication in families is strengthened.
  • Families can work together to reach a common goal
  • Families can learn to appreciate cultural and social differences
  • New values such as kindness, teamwork, and respect are learned.
  • Family members can learn new skills and increase confidence.
  • Families can make a real difference in the lives of others.

Families should consider:

  • Who is going to volunteer?  (Immediate family members, extended family members, friends, etc.)
  • How often and when can members make time to volunteer as a family?
  • What type of volunteering does the family want to participate in?

Once you have picked a volunteer opportunity:

  • Is the voluntary opportunity safe for all family members (ex. For younger children)
  • Does your family agree with the mission or mandate of the organization?
  • Who is going to be the contact person for the family?
